  • Five Canadians on Air Algerie flight that disappeared from radar, crashed

    An Air Algerie flight from Burkina Faso to Algeria's capital that disappeared from radar over northern Mali during a rainstorm carried 116 people, including five Canadians, officials said. The MD-83 vanished less than an hour after takeoff from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. Air Algerie Flight 5017 was operated by Spanish airline Swiftair, which owns the plane. "Everything allows us to believe this plane crashed in Mali," French President Francois Hollande said in a statement after an emergency meeting in Paris with senior officials, adding the crew changed its flight path because of "particularly difficult weather conditions."


  • Ten-year sentence for Toronto man who wanted to join Somali terror group

    A court in Brampton, Ont., has sentenced a man who planned to join a terrorist group in Somalia to 10 years in prison. Mohamed Hassan Hersi, 28, of Toronto, was found guilty in May of trying to take part in the activities of a terrorist group. He was also convicted of advising a person to participate in terrorist activity. Hersi was arrested in March 2011 at Toronto's international airport.
